In Greece a neo-nazist party is climbing to power. They take on charity actions and security services for the old people to foster their public image. They blame the others, in this case, the immigrants, for everything that is going wrong in Greece, and that is always something people are naturally inclined to believe. And with lots of young man unemployed, that are certainly sure that it can't be their fault, it cames in handy to have someone to blame. Nationalism is the answer. Its all about us being the good guys and others being the bad guys. Its so simple and catchy as pop song from the sixties.
But really, is it any good?
Only if you think the problem is really a matter of where one is born. And that beating foreigners with sticks is really going to solve anything, as it is known to be happening there. One party leader has gone as far as trowing a glass of water and slapping oposing political party members... On a television debate!
So how can these neonazist people be gaining ground? They just came from a incredibly high 7% to a mind blowing 10%. Don't they know where nationalistic driven politics lead? Europe's history is full of its consequences.
That's one of the reasons we should have a European Union, with European Citizens. If you don't think that all that matters is where you are born, you must condemn nationalism and its causes, and vice versa.
And it cannot be done without so much inequality within European Union. Or is it right if it just happens away from home?
Inequalities lead to violence. And thats were something should be made.
Greece failed its integration process. Not by a large margin, mind you, but it probably wasn't ready when it entered the Eurozone. What we should have learned here is that the integration process must be something done on more levels of action and taking much more time. Instead, not looking at their own countries trajectories and debt (which should give a clue about economic affairs), they said Greeks were lazy. As in "most Greeks are lazy". And turned to their own form of blaming the foreigners for any inconvenience. Its their fault that they are down. Let us just LEND a little bit and feel good about it. They must deserve poverty.
After all, depression is something that can only happen to others. Right?
And so the Greeks have one more cause to resentment. They are now part of something bigger, but are being treated as lesser citizens.
And so, much against rational choices, exacerbated nationalism is on the rise. And don't say it would not happen anywhere else. We all know better.
The point being that it's clear that the Unions efforts are not solving problems, but are indeed creating some.
With more countries within the European Union in need of assistance, similar problems may rise. Even if one finds acceptable not to take effective and morally right solutions, one should worry with the problems inequality brings. Within and between nations. And this one is... A European problem.
We may not have a say on countries that are not full democracies, and are therefore hard to reach the people. But that is not Greece. In fact, they invented it. Imagine if they would get royalties for that?
